Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The play will receive its world premiere in London’s West End on July 30, 2016.
It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.
While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.
At times, however, the Cursed Child kind of felt like a bunch of fanfiction ideas mixed up into the canon world, which was a bit odd, but kind of worked out in the end. I don’t think I will actually count this in the canon world, just because some of the events and ideas don’t really sit well with me, hence the 4-and-a-half star rating. I think I would’ve rated it higher if I hadn’t expected so much from it.
I loved seeing the golden trio again, Ron hasn’t changed a bit, haha, he’s still hilarious and the humour is still there. It’s kind of odd seeing the characters all grown up, and I wished it would’ve focused more on the next generation, I was hoping to see more of the Weasley grandchildren! Even though we got little bits of a few characters, it wasn’t enough for me. I was pretty disappointed we didn’t get to meet more of the clan, especially Victoire and Teddy.
I love Scorpious. He was such a lovely character, and I wouldn’t have minded seeing more of him, and what I really did love was how carefree he was, like even though people were prejudiced against him, he simply flicked it off his shoulder and continued on. I love Rose too, and I wish she’d been in the story more. Sometimes I really felt for Albus, but other times I just got so annoyed at how he was acting. Even though I could understand where he was coming from, he was just too sulky and stubborn for me to really feel attached to him. I did, really love the character development that came later on, there was just so much understanding and love.
THAT PLOT TWIST THOUGH??? LIKE????? I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT AT ALL. Although, I think it would’ve had a stronger impact if the book was written in novel form, as opposed to script form. There were a couple of plot holes regarding the plot twist though, so I’m interested to see whether J.K. Rowling comments on it.
All in all, I really enjoyed my brief return to the wizarding world, and I will continue to hope for more canon next-generation material!

Other recent credits include The Glass Menagerie at ART and on Broadway and The Ambassador at BAM. Tiffany was Associate Director of the National Theatre of Scotland from 2005 to 2012, and was a Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University in the 2010-2011 academic year.
Jack Thorne writes for theatre, film, television and radio. His theatre credits include Hope and Let the Right One In, both directed by John Tiffany, The Solid Life of Sugar Water for the Graeae Theatre Company and the National Theatre, Bunny for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival,Stacy for the Trafalgar Studios, and 2nd May 1997 and When You Cure Me for the Bush. His adaptations include The Physicists for the Donmar Warehouse and Stuart: A Life Backwards for HighTide. On film his credits include War Book, A Long Way Down and The Scouting Book for Boys.
